About William S. Hanley
Bill’s years of practice began in Illinois following degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Chicago School of Law and post graduate studies with the Institute of Government at the University of Illinois in Urbana. After several years with a major Chicago Law firm he served as Legislative Counsel to Illinois Governor Richard B. Ogilvie. His private practice resumed following the Governor’s term and he remained in Springfield, Illinois where he joined and helped develop the firm of Sorling, Northrup, Hanna, Cullen & Cochran, Ltd. He remains of counsel to the firm.
His love of Maine prompted his admission to practice in Maine and the beginning of a solo practice in Blue Hill in 1995. The strong real estate market led to an active real estate practice in which he serves as approved attorney for area banks including Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and Union Trust Company. Bill serves as closing agent for national lenders such as Wells Fargo, Citi Corp Mortgage and Bank of America. He is also a member of the Maine State Bar Association’s Title Standards Committee, a Maine licensed title insurance agent for First American Title Insurance Company and an affiliate member of the Hancock/Washington Counties Board of Realtors.
A commitment to community service is reflected in chairmanship of the Brooklin Planning Board, and past chairmanship of the Brooklin Comprehensive Plan Committee, and service as a director of the Blue Hill Historical Society, a founding member of the Blue Hill Chamber of Commerce and a past director of Coastal Holdings Inc. the operating company for the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Parker Ridge Retirement Community.
Bill has received Martindale-Huebbel’s highest rating, “av”, for practicing lawyers, and is listed in Who’s Who in American Law.
